Recent Earthquakes around the world

Earthquakes occur around the world on a daily basis. Many earthquakes only are small, around 3-4 on the richter scale. But there are weekly earthquakes around 5-6 on the richter scale.

Earthquakes basically occur due to a build up of stress in rocks. If the stress is too much, the rock fractures. this is like a sudden movement abit like when you pull on a piece of paper and suddenly tears.

Most large magnitude earthquakes tend to occur in areas around the earth where large tectonic plates are moving towards each other. The pressures in those areas are huge and so larger earth quakes can occur.

In Australia earthquakes are less frequent but can be quite large but only over a few decades . Even then these tend to occur more often in areas with low population.
