Classification of birds

Birds are generally classified into two broad groups initially: Palaeognathae and Neognathae.  

The classification below is based on Jarvis, E.D. et al. (2014) with some clade names after Yury, T. et al. (2013).

Palaeognathae

  • Struthioniformes (Ostriches)

Neognathae     

  • Galloanserae (Chickens, grouse, ducks, swans etc)

  • Neoaves ( all the other kinds of birds)
