Currently (2020) in the general news, the term coronavirus is really the short hand for the initial term "novel corona virus" which causes the disease COVID-19, which is currently a pandemic. The official scientific name of the  virus is SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2).

From a virology perspective coronavirus is one of several coronaviruses

The name coronavirus is derived from the Latin corona, meaning "crown" or "halo", which refers to the characteristic appearance reminiscent of a crown or a solar corona around the virions (virus particles) when viewed under two-dimensional transmission electron microscopy, due to the surface covering in club-shaped protein spikes.
