What is Writing Fiction?

Fiction writing is traditionally the creation of a short story, long story or novel that is not a true story (although it may be based on fact or history or future speculations).

person writing

The word 'fiction' comes from the Latin word Fich, which means 'shaping or feigning, to form, shape, invent'. Another ancient related word is fingere, which sounds similar to finger.

Could it be that is comes from the use of the fingers as a tool to create things like the early cave paintings?

Why is Fiction writing important and valuable?

Storytelling teaches a person skills to do with language. A storyteller is better equipped to express themselves, to order their ideas, to persuade others to their point of view, and to give others an insight into an experience they do not know.

Writing fiction is used in the entertainment industry for screenplays, novels and theatre scripts.

The self-expression of fiction writing is useful in communication-related employment. The persuasion aspect is useful in arenas including politics. Fiction can also provide insights that give readers deeper empathy, stronger understanding, or a fuller knowledge of their society or world.

How to write fiction

The hardest part about writing a story is broken pencil image finishing it. Many writers struggle to resist being too critical of first drafts, or they find themselves unable to continue. The best thing for such writers is to simply plough through, setting aside dreams of fame and fortune due to brilliant writing until the second draft.

Tips for writing : dialogue and characters

Dialogue can be tested for rhythm by speaking it aloud. Characters can be developed by giving them faults - whether physical, emotional, or interpersonal. To make a story interesting, your characters need to struggle. It’s usually advisable to give them plenty of physical and/or emotional pain to deal with along the way.

Tips for writing: story

The beginning and the end are the most important, and can often be linked by a good writer, whether by a repeated symbol, a repeated setting, or a problem and its resolution. A story should feature an interesting (though not necessarily likeable) character with an important goal, or people tend not to want to read on.

What is the history of story telling and fiction?

Storytelling is as old as the human old book race. It is a source of enjoyment, entertainment, employment, teaching, warning, and camaraderie. A skilled storyteller has the power to do all of the above and more. Some books have had a huge influence, whether in politics, economy, philosophy, or other areas.

The Future of writing fiction?

While parents worry about their kids spending more time watching television than sleeping, the power of story is unlikely to ever be replaced. It's possible that books will eventually fade out but stories will always be told. A large proportion of television, especially that watched by children, is actually story, including drama, romance, science fiction, etc.

The physical presence of a story is likely to continue shifting emphasis from the written word on paper to the written word on screen and the acted word on television and movies. It is likely to go into other materials such as holograms or virtual reality stories, but the act of storytelling at its heart will never be obsolete. What
