What is the history of Australia Day?

 

The actual date of Australia day was based on the year 1788 on the 26th of January when Captain Arthur Phillip formally declared possesion of the Colony of NSW and was placed as the first Governer General.

The various states of Australia started to adopt the day more formally over a number of years.

It was not until 1946 that all the states actually agreed on the date to celebrate a day called "Australia Day". Previous to this the day was refered to as "Foundation Day", and "Anniversay Day"
