Why is government important?

Government is important for a country in setting rules, procedures , laws and ensuring that the ruling organisation exerts control and direction of a country.

For some countries government is a major employer and provides jobs for hundreds of thousands of people.

International Relations

Governments are most important when one country is dealing with another. In other words when the government of one country has to negotiate with another for something.

Sometimes government discussions are favourable and constructive but sometimes it is not and there is conflict.

Governments can often have disagreements in the way in which governments have rules in their countries. Or the way governments might want to gain advantages over another country. But sometimes governments agree to things.

The united nations is an example of an organisation in which governments can often agree to things.

How does does government work?

How a government works really depends on the type of government.

There are quite a few different ways in which a country can be governed. But all ways of ruling a society can be broken down into the following sets of functions. Some or all of these functions can be seperate people or departments. IN some cases it could be the same person or department.

Legislative - the part that makes the laws, creates laws

Executive - the part that enforces or carries out the laws or rules.

Judicial - the part that decides if the rules have been interpreted correctly or fairly.

Styles of government

Limited governments vs unlimited governments.

Limited governments are limited by constitutions for example. These constitutions are interpreted

unlimited governments are not limited by any generally agreed rules. Sometimes these are refered to as dictatorships.

There are also issues of sovereignty and legitimacy for governments. Sovereinty is about where the power/authority of a government comes from.

legitimacy is about whether people agree to the authority of power base.

democracy - often is expressed in two styles: representative democracies, participating democracies.

Participating democracies is when the people often vote directly on many issues.

Representative democracies is when people vote for other people to represent their views.

No governments -

Anarchy, there are sometimes situations in which a region has no specific government.

What is the history of government?

The first form of government was probably a form of family heirarchy. It may not be known what the exact chain of command would have been because it depends on whether territory was well defined. For example if the family was a hunter gather style society or more settled groups.

But the first governments that have similarities to today probably needed some form of written language or symbols to identify territories.

Almost all early forms of government where kinds of monarchies ( either Kings or Queens). This is whereby a single individual has the final say on most things.

(The) Magna Carta in 1215 AD is often considered to one of the first steps in a long historical process leading to running a country using a constitution that limits the powers of the people regarded as the head of the government.

The Future of government?

Western governments are likely to remain mostly the same for quite sometime. Western democracies are likely to be in a constant state of minor changes back and forth with large bureacracies maintaining most of the functions of governments.

The only major changes to a government structure is usually as a result of a sudden and very dramatic change in a territory, for example with war, or a natural disaster that disrupts lines of communication. One government type can change to another.
