Is a fashion designer an artist?

27 July 2004
by Richard Conan-Davies

A fashion designer is definitely an artist. This is because an artist in general terms is a highly creative person. There are no doubts some fashion designers that are more artistic than others. fashion is about creating new combinations of shapes, colours and textures.

If you think of an artist as a painter then a fashion designer is using similar tools, and in particular thoughts and thinking, except that there is more of an emphasis on the human form and how it interacts with fabrics in both colour, texture and forms.

An artist could be thought as a person that thinks or behaves in a kind of way that allows their interpretations of their experiences to be demonstrated through their creations.
