Does clothing communicate the significance of cultural, historical and social ideas?

Fashion certainly is an important tool of communication, it is also an instant visible form of communication.

But what do we mean by culture and fashion? Surely they are the same thing. Culture can be viewed as more of the purely creative aspects of a society. How much time and effort that a society puts into cultural endevours depends on how big that society and how much wealth the society might have access to.

The historical aspects of fashion is probably the most interesting aspect of fashion. A very useful website that covers this in detail is fashion-era.com

Social ideas in fashion often reflect the different roles people and genders have in a society. A classic example is the time when women began wearing clothing styles similar to men. For example the acceptance of wearing trousers by women.

Another example might be the fashion of wearing hats on a regular basis.
