Why is hay fever treatment important?

Reducing the impact of hay fever symtoms will allow you to lead a much more productive day, or even life.

For example you could be spending several minutes each day blowing your nose or not being able to see properly due to blurry eyes.

By managing your hay fever by using a an antihistamine or minimising your exposure to allergins would save you possibley several hours a day.

Spending time blowing your nose could be better spent being more productive.

Getting a treatment for hay fever symptoms would allow you feel 'less lousy'

How do hay fever treatments work?

There are two basic ways of dealing with hayfever.

  1. stop the allergin getting into your system, air filters, reducing exposure etc
  2. block the biochemical response and hence the system. This is what is explained below.

Most hay fever drugs work in a similar way by targetting your cell's histamine receptors.

The so-called anti-histamines. They work by blocking H1 receptors that can be found in your nose and eyes.

one of the active ingredients of a common antihistamine is azelastine hydrochloride.

The newer drugs don't make you drowsy because they have had their chemical structure changed slightly so they can't get through the blood brain barrier.

Another way for dealing with hayfever is to check the "Pollen count" reports on the daily news.

Australian Pollen Data

This may give you an indication as to whether you should take your hay fever medicine.

Sometimes a method of desensitisation may also help reduce the impact of hay fever for pollens.

Sometimes by changing mucous in your nose via drugs (eg Nazalese) may be able to filter out some of the pollens and so you are less likely to get an immune response.

What is the history of hay fever treatment ?

Hay fever treatments have not had a long history as it was not until the discovery of histamines and the workings of the immune system in the 1960s and 70s that reliable treatments became available.

The early anti-histamines had a major problem. They tended to make you very sleepy.

The future of hay fever treatments ?

The future of hay fever is about discovering the answers to the questions we have about hay fever . It is about finding out how it occurs and how we might treat the condition.

With further understanding of the immune system it may be possible to create specific treatments. Perhaps not simply blocking the histamine receptors but targeting another biochemical pathway.

It is feasible that hay fever could be entirely avoided in the future. Hay fever is just one type of allergic reaction.

A far future thought of hay fever treatements is that nanomachines could be devised that could target ,collect and dispose of pollen before it enters the lungs.

But ideally a form of immuno treatment would be the way to go. For example a reliable and effective for of desensitization that would effectively make a person immune to a type of pollen without a histamine reaction.
