How do hay fever
treatments work?
There are two
basic ways of dealing with hayfever.
- stop the
allergin getting into your system, air filters,
reducing exposure etc
- block the
biochemical response and hence the system. This
is what is explained below.
Most hay fever
drugs work in a similar way by targetting your
cell's histamine receptors.
The so-called
anti-histamines. They work by blocking H1 receptors
that can be found in your nose and eyes.
one of the active
ingredients of a common antihistamine is azelastine
hydrochloride.
The newer drugs
don't make you drowsy because they have had their
chemical structure changed slightly so they can't
get through the blood brain barrier.
