Ash wednesday bushfires

by Richard Conan-Davies
27 November 2005

The Ash Wednesday bushfires, also known as Southern Victoria and SA bushfires 1983, were a series of over 100 bushfires that started around the 16th of February 1983.

The fire moved across victoria and South Australia and killed some 75 people and injuring 2,600 people including destroying around 9,000 homes.

Over 300,000 livestock died which included 250,000 sheep and other kinds of animals.

The estimated cost was around $324 million dollars.

Over a million hectares were burnt during the summer of 82/83

The conditions at the time.

Very high temperatures of around 42°C in melbourne ( probably higher in the country areas) with very low humidity of around 6% combined with very strong wind gusts of around 100 km/h fanned the fires. In addition there had been an almost 10 month drought so there was plenty of bushfire fuel to burn.
