What are the technologies for dealing with bushfires?

The technologies for dealing with bushfires include the following

  • fighting(extingusihing) bush fires
  • controlling or containing bushfires
  • preventing bushfires

    more info...

The main weapon for fighting bushfires is water, the more water the more effective.

Why are fire fighting technologies important ?

The most obvious reason for these technologies is to minimise, prevent damage to property people and live stock that are affected by fires.

Controlling or containing large bushfires would also reduce the impact of smoke/haze in the atmosphere and CO2 levels.

How do bushfires technologies work?

As noted before the main method for controlling a bushfire is using water.

The water can be delivered in a number of ways:

  • Hoses, self contained high pressure water tanks.
  • Aircraft - helicopters or fixed wing aircraft.

Hoses are the first line of defence

Helicopters can carry small amounts of water perhaps to target small out breaks quickly

    water bomber
water bombing aircraft can deliver very large quantities of water.(from waterbomber.com)

Bush fires are also controlled and partly prevented by:

  • Back burning in appropriate conditions. This reduces the amount of potential fuel that could burn out of control.

  • Fire breaks that are spaces where there are no trees and are kept clear. This has a similar effect as back burning but tends to be more permanent.

    Bushfire fighting Safety Tip
If fighting a bushfire at home in the backyard make sure you are fully protected by clothing that covers your whole body. The radiant heat can burn you severely.

How does water extinguish a fire?

Essentially water is effective because it reduces the access of oxygen to the fire.

The water hits the flame and the heat is absorbed in the water which then disipates as steam

Water blocks access to of oxygen to the fuel by covering the flame in a layer of water extinguishing the flame.

The future of bushfires fighting technology

There are range of technologies that could be developed in the future. some fanicful and others less so.

The CSIRO in Australia is actively researching ways of fighting fires at their Fire Science and Technology Laboratory

imagine...

  • A Fire fighting water bomb that just continuously sprays out water.
  • A permanent sprinkler system on a seperate water line.
  • A liquid nitrogen spray system could freeze( though impractical)
  • A startrek system that would simply set up an invisble antigravity forcefield
