An unusual signal from SETI

3 September 2004
by Richard Conan-Davies

Some screen savers analysing radio signal data from the Aricebo telescope may have stumbled across one of the most interesting radio signals to date according to a report from New Scientist magazine.

The project called SETI@home has been running for around 6 years and uses computer idle time to analyse radio signals mostly from the Arecibo radio telescope.

This new signal seems particularly interesting because it is has similar sort of behaviour that a signal of intelligence might have. Although the researcher in of the project are very cautious about suggesting anything too firm at this stage as it still needs to be analysed further.

One of the lead scientists Dan Werthimer of U.C. Berkeley told the Planetary Society that the chance of this signal being from a civilisation is very slim.

Could this be a signal from another civilisation or just a natural phenomena not observed.
