Vegetables and fruit better for heart than cancer prevention

5 November 2004
by Richard Conan-Davies

In a recent study presented in the National Cancer Institute Journal suggests that fruit and vegetables don't always have the protective effect against cancers as previously thought. Although the study suggests it certainly helps with heart health.

The study, led by Dr. Walter Willett of the Department of Nutrition, Harvard School of Public Health , looked at 71 910 females and 37 725 males and found that there was a modest increase in protection against heart related illnesses.

The research is being question because it is not clear as to whether the study is took place over a long enough period of time.

But the study still confirms the recommendations the American Heart Association that eating 5 servings of fruit and vegetables per day is good for your long term health

There is some dispute over how effective fruit and vegies might be for cancer prevention but further studies are needed.
