More water evidence on mars rocks

8 October 2004
by Richard Conan-Davies

The Mars rovers are enduring the martian winter with reduced light now but are still working away, perhaps not quite so often though.

In recent days the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity has been taking photos of a piece of rock called "Escher" and doing some chemical analysis that indicates there has been water activity on it.

It is thought that an impact excavated a stadium sized crater and then some rocks there may have become wet a second time.

The rock has a similar appearance to cracked mud on Earth after the water has dried up.

Lasting about three times as long as originally schedule, NASA's Mars rovers Spirit and Opportunity have still been making good progress and scientific discoveries.
