A triple eclipse on Jupiter

8 November 2004
by Richard Conan-Davies

The NASA Hubble space telescope has spotted a rare event of 3 eclipses or shadows of Jupiters' largest moons Io, Ganymede, and Callisto.

This image makes Jupiter look for a moment like it has a case of the measles or even as if the planet had been hit by something.

Shadows across the surface probably don't have much of an effect on the planet but may reduce the temperature in the shadowed area very slightly.

Eclipses happen all around the solar system and can occasionally be seen across the face of the largest planets like Jupiter
