Excercise for girls helps avoid osteoporosis later in life

14 June 2004
by Richard Conan-Davies

Researchers from Penn State Univeristy and the John Hopkins Univeristy have shown that it is not just calcium that is important for women but exercise is also critical to help avoid osteoporosis.

Lead researcher Tom Lloyd of the Penn State University studied 80 white girls' bones through a special scaninng technique called DEXA scanning. This allows for checking the bone strength.

What they found was that calcium intake did not have any significant impact and that exercise improved bone density by 3-5%.

This is apparently the amount that can be lost during older age.

Pressure on the bones from exercise in young girls appears to help build up bone density
