Going blind early in life gives a super sense of pitch

15 July 2004
by Richard Conan-Davies

The fictional character in the movie Dare Devil went blind due to an accident and gain a super sense of hearing. Now it seems that a super sense of hearing really does happen but for people who went blind before the age of 2.

This is according to new research published in the Journal Nature led by researcher Robert Zatorre of McGill University.

The researchers tested blind people and their sense of hearing differences by playing different pitches and at different lengths of time. The important thing about the research is that they compared people who went blind before the age of 2 and those after.

They found that people who were blind before 2 years of age could detect differences in pitches much more easily that those after 2 years of age.
