Kangaroo mother care should be encouraged

15 November 2004
by Richard Conan-Davies

Premature babies that do not suffer any other medical conditions could be cared for using the Kangaroo mother care method developed in third world countries.

The technique of Kangaroo mother care (KMC) uses the method kangaroos use when they care for their early born joeys by ensuring that the baby is in contact with the mothers skin for 24 hours.

This method has now been investigated by Dr. Nathalie Charpak of the University of Bogota, Columbia and presented in the British Medical Journal as an effective alternative to neonatal humidicribs used in most western hospitals.

The article explained that "KMC is a scientifically sound, effective, and efficient alternative to neonatal care units in many settings "

This method of KMC has been used for many years and has been shown to be even more effective than neonatal units.
