Mount St Helens still oozing away

18 October 2004
by Richard Conan-Davies

Geologists are still being kept guessing as to what the volcano Mt St Helens is up to.

Latest observations suggest that the lava dome building up in the centre may be breaking in half allowing some very sticky and unpleasant lava to roll down the slopes on the inside of the volcano.

Geologists warn that if there is heavy rain or by interaction of hot rocks with snow or glacier ice small volcanic debris flows called lahars could suddenly descend down the Toutle River valley.
