Sleep proteins in the brain help anxiety

19 August 2004
by Richard Conan-Davies

Having trouble sleeping or feeling a bit anxious? Well it seems that researchers may have discovered a new protein in the brain that helps sort oout and regulate sleep patterns.

Researchers, led by Dr. Rainer Reinscheid , from the University of California Irvine were investigating what a protein called neuropeptide S (NPS) did to sleep and alertness in rats.

Produced by previously unidentified neurons in the rat's brain stem this new protein seems to have a big impact on the alertness of the rats.

This research has importance for trying to help people with sleep disorders and even attention deficit disorder and may lead to new and much more specific drugs for people who don't have good sleep control
