Tour de France riders can be tracked from space

24 July 2004
by Richard Conan-Davies

THe European Space Agency (ESA) and their GPS (global positioning) satellite system called Galileo (EGNOS) is trialling a system to track individual riders of the Tour de France.

The system is said to be accurate down to 1 metre and will be used in future to provide real-time tracking via the web and TV. It is hoped that this information can be used to produce interactive animations and graphics so that virtually any angle of the race can be seen.

This traking system will also help team managers to figure out new strategies for individual team members at different stages of the race.
