Tiny fuel cell developed

26 June 2004
by Richard Conan-Davies

A tiny fuel cell the size of a large thumb has been announced by the Toshiba electronics company as being the smallest of its kind.

The device is expected to provide a reliable source of power to small electronic devices. For example they tested it on an P3 Player and it lasted for about 20 hours.

Fuel cells are remarkably simple devices that rely on quite a common natural chemical reaction. In this case methanol is seperate from oxygen by a special mmembrane. By allowing a controlled mixing of the methanol it can release electricity to power a device.

A fuel cell may be able to run some devices for about 20 hours with out recharging
