Frozen genetic noah's ark created

27 July 2004
by Richard Conan-Davies

The equivalent of Noah's Ark is being developed but not using wood but rather liquid nitrogen and the genetic information from endangered species.

Some species to be put in the Ark first include the spotted seahorse, Arabian oryx, Socorro dove and Partula snails.

This project is important so that if these creatures do go extinct then their genes will not be lost. It may be possible to recreate these creates with future technologies or understand similar genes in living creatures.

The Natural History Museum in London along with the Zoological Society of London and the Institute of Genetics at the University of Nottingham are the main organisations involved in the project.
