Grow your own jaw in your back

29 August 2004
by Richard Conan-Davies

Medical researchers and engineers have successfully grown a jaw bone just next to the man's own shoulder blade. It took only 4 weeks and the man was able to have his first solid meal since he had his jaw removed due to cancer.

Basically the medical doctors from the University of Kiel in Germany led by Dr. Patrick Warnke created a titanium mesh designed from scans and modelled on a computer. The mesh was then filled with stem cells from the mans own bone marrow with a few growth factors and implanted just behind the shoulder blad muscle and allowed to grow. Interestingly it caused no pain at all for the patient.

This kind of technique raises hope for other people who need major reconstructive surgery for the face.

The jaw was designed using a x-ray images with computer assistance and created using a titanium mesh filled with bone marrow cells.
