Titan is up close for the first time in radar

29 October 2004
by Richard Conan-Davies

Radar images of Titan show some very interesting features which may indicate a liquid of sorts.

This has been spotted by the The Cassini-Huygens space craft operated by NASA and ESA from an image which shows quite a variation on land forms.

The radar image is about is about 250 kilometres wide by 478 kilometres.

The image is interesting because it shows the diversity of the landscape on Titan. It is thought that some areas may have depressions that could contain liquid methane.

Is this the 'cat shape' on the surface of Titan just recently observed by the daughter of a team member during the fly by? The red line shows the possible outline of the cat.
