Design an Antarctic base competition

30 June 2004
by Richard Conan-Davies

Arcchitects from around the world are being asked to consider a new new design for the British Antarctic base.

The Royal Institute of British Archictects (RIBA) has asked for expressions of interest in the project.

Designing something for the antarctic poses lots of technical and environmental issues, the extreme cold, wind and snow are some of the major consideration.

Some of the main criteria to consider are from the competition rules state that the base:

  • Is functionally efficient
  • Is aesthetically stimulating
  • Must be completed within its construction phase budget of approximately £19 million
  • Represents best Value for Money over its full expected design life (20 years minimum)
  • Has a lifetime maintenance strategy that takes into account the remoteness of the station and the limitations of logistic supply.

The base also needs to house around 12 people during the winter months and upto 50 during the summer.

Could the winning design be a modular style like this?
