Minature submarine revealed

31 July 2004
by Richard Conan-Davies

The Australian National University (ANU) has unveiled what is claimed to be world's smallest self powered and self guiding submarine.

The mini submarine called Serafina was developed by the ANU Deperatment of Systems Engineering

One of the leaders of the project, Dr Uwe Zimmer, told the ANU that "Small and versatile submersibles, such as Serafina, are an important leap towards making underwater exploration affordable and effective,"

Costing around only $AU 1000 the subsmersible could almost be mass produced. This may lead to having several of these devices swimming togther , at around one metre per second, each with different sensors.

The submersible contains mainly batteries and space for a range of sensors and computer that can be programmed. It is hoped that it could go underwater as deep as 5,000 metres.
