Spectcular images of rings of Saturn

3 December 2004
by Richard Conan-Davies

NASA's JPL and ESA's Cassini Huygens Probe to Saturn have recently produced some spectacular images of the rings of Saturn.

The rings are only one part of the mysteries of Saturn that are being investigated. One of the other tasks of the Cassini mission is to land a probe on the near by Saturnian moon Titan.

This recent image was taken using an infrared filter which shows up materials in the rings that are too dark to be seen normally.

The rings are composed on a wide size and range of materials from tiny particles of soot and ice to large house sized chunks.

This image was taken some 618,000 kilometers from the surface.
