Coral reefs may increase due to global warming

15 December 2004
by Richard Conan-Davies

A growth rate increase of 35% for coral reefs is predicted for the year 2100 according to recent studies and analysis by scientists at the University of New South Wales in Australia.

This is partly due to an increase in the average ocean temperatures from global warming.

This is in contrast to a previous study that suggested a decline in coral reefs. The new study looked more at the biological activity of the coral such as how much calcium the corals absorb and turn into coral.

CSIRO's ( The Australian Scientific Research organisation) Dr Richard Matear explained that "Our results show that increases in coral reef calcification associated with ocean warming outweigh decreases associated with increased atmospheric CO2",
