Computers to go nanoscale

5 February 2005
by Richard Conan-Davies

In a paper published in the Journal of Applied Physics researchers at Hewlett & Packard Electronics company have developed a nanoswitch that could replace transistor technology in computers.

The new nanoswitch called a "crossbar latch" is an important development because it is considered that current transistors can't work when shrunk down to the size of a few nanometers.

This could produce computers significantly more powerful than what know today. But it is not likely that this technology will be available for another ten years. This is mainly because a technique needs to be developed that can mass produce these tiny devices.

This larger scale microchip circuit board
may be replaced by nanoscale switches.
