Green tea extract fights cancer

16 February 2005
by Richard Conan-Davies

Green tea extract has potential as an anti-cancer agent. This is at least against bladder cancer cells. Researchers from UCLA ( Univeristy of California Los Angeles) discovered that the extract even leaves the healthy cells alone.

Published in the Journal Clinical Cancer Research , led by Dr. JianYu Rao he suggested that the extract seems to interupt some aspect of the cancer cell growth.

Dr. Rao explained that "In effect, the green tea extract may keep the cancer cells confined and localized, where they are easier to treat and the prognosis is better,"

Dr. Rao further explained that "Cancer cells are invasive and green tea extract interrupts the invasive process of the cancer."

The extract appears to interupt a biochemical pathway that controls the way cancer cells bind togther. In this case it causes the cells to bind together more tightly.

Quite a few animal and human studies have suggested that green tea extract provides strong anti-cancer effects in several human cancers.

Green tea extract can disrupt the growth of
some bladder cancer cells but further research is needed.
