It is quite an
impressive feat of engineering to think that the
NASA/JPL Mars rovers Spirit and Opportunity have
lasted a year on the Red Planet. It is pretty tough
place to hang out in with such cold wind, dusty and
gravelly ground and plenty of UV with not much
atmosphere.
JPL's rover
project manager Jim Erickson explained to NASA that
"The rovers are both in amazingly good shape for
their age," he explained further that "The twins
sailed through the worst of the martian winter with
flying colors, and spring is coming. Both rovers
are in strong positions to continue exploring, but
we can't give you any guarantees."
