First images of Titan's surface revealed

15 January 2005
by Richard Conan-Davies

The first images of titan's surface have been transmitted by the Huygens space probe after a successful journey from the Cassini spacecraft orbiting Saturn.

One of the first images appears to show the surface of titan with chuncks of ice strewn around. The first image has not yet provided a scale but will be figured out soon.

This image shows the surface of Titan as the probe decends through the atmosphere. You can see that it has the familar look of an Earth image suggesting liquid, rivers and shorelines. But not of water but rather liquid methane at about -160°C.

This is one of the first images received of the surface from the Huygens probe once it landed. It is thought that the objects are boulders of ice
