Mars rover finds a meteorite on Mars

22 January 2005
by Richard Conan-Davies

The NASA/JPL Mars rover Opportunity disocovered the first meteorite on another planet.

This classic specimen dubbed "Heat Shield Rock" on the sandy dunes of Mars was about the size of a basket ball and mostly made of nickle and iron

Dr. Steve Squyres of Cornell University explained that "I never thought we would get to use our instruments on a rock from someplace other than Mars,"

In someways this was surprising finding but not totally unexpected.

This meteorite on Mars is similar in composition to the type that created the famous crater in Arizona.
