People attracted to the same genes

27 July 2005
by Richard Conan-Davies

Research has confirmed what we already may have suspected about who we like to hang out with. We tend to be attracted to people who are similar to ourselves.

Researchers from the University of Western Ontario suggest that genetics plays a role and that we tend to be attracted to each other with similar sorts of genes.

The researchers, J. Philippe Rushton and Trudy Ann Bons discovered this by asking Several hundred pairs of identical and fraternal twins, their spouses, and their best friends a 130-item using a questionnaire that measured social background, personality, and attitudes.

Rushton did caution that "We found that more than half of the variance in this study was due to unique environmental effects such as being in the right place at the right time." He added, "Similarity is only one of many factors in choosing a partner."
