Contraceptive pill  can cause depression

2 March 2005
by Richard Conan-Davies

The contraceptive pill may lead some women to an increased likely hood of depression according to a pilot study by The Alfred Psychiatry Research Centre.

Professor Jayashri Kulkarni , who led the study, tracked 62 women and compared depression symptom scores between users and non-users of combined oral contraceptives.

The group on the Pill had an average depression rating scale score of 17.6, compared to 9.8 for the group who did not take the Pill.

Professor Kulkarni explained that "...we hope to improve the quality of mental health care for women, and improve the development, understanding and use of contraception"

Hormone based contraceptive pills may trigger depression for some women.
