Finger length predicts aggression

10 March 2005
by Kimiko Holder

According to recent research, it may be possible to predict physically aggressive personalities by examining finger length.

Dr Peter Hurd is a psychologist at the University of Alberta. Through the use of surveys and hand measurements taken from 300 undergraduates at the University, Hurd found a correlation between finger length and physically aggressive personalities. Those with a shorter index finger relative to the ring finger were more likely to become physically aggressive. This correlation could be linked to foetus development in the womb.

Recent studies have shown a correlation between finger lengths and the amount of testosterone that a foetus is exposed to in the womb. These studies suggest that the higher the amount of testosterone exposed to the foetus prior to birth, the shorter the index finger relative to the ring finger. Hurd suggests that this research indicates that at least some of our behaviour and personality development occurs before birth.

"More than anything, I think the findings reinforce and underline that a large part of our personalities and our traits are determined while we're still in the womb" explained Hurd.

Hurd will continue to study the correlation between finger length and behaviour. Hurd doesn't believe that finger length should be used to pre-determine the likely-hood of an individual becoming violent, however he believes it could provide a useful basis for further investigation into personality traits.

"Finger length can tell you a little bit about where personality comes from, and that's what we are continuing to explore" explained Hurd.
