Keep your brain young with exercise

14 November 2005
by Richard Conan-Davies

Regular light physical activity has been shown to keep brain cells in better condition.

Research by the Univeristy of Florida led by Thomas Foster ,examined the effects of light daily exercise on rats and discovered that those rats that were more active had less oxidative damage in their brains.

All the researchers did was compare rats brains depending on if they had access to a training wheel or not.

The more active rats were found to have fewer byproducts of oxidative stress in their brains. Fats known as lipids that help stabilize cell membranes, and DNA, the molecule that contains our genetic blueprint, both better withstood the rigors of time.

Brain cells are kept younger by engaging in regular exercise, this is equivalent to 30 minutes of exercise per day in humans
