Earth Dynamics 2006

1 December 2006
by Carina Lee

With advanced geodetic techniques including GPS and satellite imagery, the Earth’s tectonic plate motions are able to be better resolved, according to studies undertaken by the Dr Paul Tregoning and the Geodynamic group at the Research School of Earth Sciences at the Australian National University.

An introduction to geodesy and the popular techniques used for geodetic measurement was presented at Earth Dynamics 2006 by Dr Paul Tregoning of ANU and Dr Phil Cummins of Geoscience Australia.

The annual conference of the Earth System Dynamics Network is run by Professor Gordon Lister and Ms Lidena Carr of the Structure/Tectonics Group at RSES, ANU.

The main themes of this year’s conference included, but were not limited to; geodesy, geodynamic modelling, risk assessment, earthquakes, satellites, fluid modelling, tsunamis, geochemistry, Earth evolution, and plate tectonics.

The three-day event, which included seminar presentations and workshops, was aimed at providing a well-rounded informative conference initiating interesting discussion from the areas in the broader fields of physical geology.
