Chronic pain can be substantially alleviated simply by listening to music according to scientists from the US, according to a report from BBC News Online.
This investigation included experimentally testing approximately 60 individuals with some type of chronic pain. The results after exposure to music showed a 21% decrease in pain levels and 25% decrease in associated depression, comparative to individuals who did not listen to the music.
Dr Sandra Siedlecki is a research from the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and she explains to BBC News Online “Our results show that listening to music had a statistically significant effect on the two experimental groups, reducing pain, depression and disability and increasing feelings of power.
There were some small differences between the two music groups, but they both showed consistent improvements in each category when compared to the control group.”
Listening to music has proved to have many social and cultural benefits. It has been determined to be a health benefit too as it allows the mind and body to relax a bit more without completely focusing on the pain.
