Pulse

A pulse is also a beat or throb of the heart. From the Old french word pous, later ( Latinized ) pouls from Latin pulsus. It also refers to an impact of something on another surface. 

Occasionally it is used in science fiction as a description of a weapon e.g. a pulse weapon.  The other use is for a type of legume called pulses
