HTML- Hyper text mark-up language

a way of representing text so that a web browser can apply formatting to the text so that words can be highlighted to respond to a mouse click.

for example if you want a web page to come up with a bold text you place a special text tag around the word like <B> bold </bold> will automatically change the word into bold
