What is an ISP?

An ISP just means Internet Service Provider. It is what allows us to connect to internet services from home.

Some ISPs also provide an internet gateway to business and goverments.

ISPs often hold vital information on all the internet address names.

lighthouseThe ISP is a bit like the gatekeeper or light house keeper at a port. The ISP provides you with a place to start your journey of the internet.

How do ISPs work?

ISPs are usually places that hold big computers called servers. These servers often hold critical information about where all the computers around the world are located.

The ISP relies on the extraordinary effort of individuals, corporations and goverments to work together.

Your ISP holds your email address and also your webpage space.

How to choose an ISP

  • It really depends on your personal preferences and needs. Most ISPs offer a range of deals.

  • If you just want to send emails and surf a few web sites then choose a light plan.

  • If you are going to stay in your own home town or you are business then go with a local provider.

  • If you are going to travel around the country choose countrywide/international service often a telecommunications company (though sometimes this is a little more expensive).

Shown above is one way an ISP is connected to you. In some cases the telephone exchange could be replaced by a broadband or cableTV optical fibre service

What is the history of the ISP?

ISPs as we know them today have only really started in the late 80s or so. This is simply because before that stage the internet was being developed by universities and had not 'boomed'.

Here are some links to historical articles on the internet

The ISP, like the rest of the internet relied on the development of the telephone system.

The first trans Atlantic telephone cable was laid in the 1800s by the Great Western.

This in a sense marked the first step to a global telecommunications network.

The Future of the ISP?

How ISP will develop into the future is mostlly dependent on competitive forces.

ISPs will become increasingly important as more information is communicated by the internet.

The best sources of information about the future of the ISP is by looking at the latest research in the ISP sciences.

An interesting new development is the introduction of new domain names. Instead of the traditional .com, .org and .net there is now .biz and .info.
