Apple iTunes MiniStore privacy issue

Is Apple harvesting your personal interest in your music collection? According to a range of reports of the web including the BBC, The new version of Apple iTunes appears to be identifying individual users music tastes. The BBC reports various bloggers concerns about the latest version of iTunes sends information back to Apple. The issue was highlighted by Kirk McElhearn who found that data being sent back to Apple included artist, title, genre as well as unique identifiers for a computer and iTunes account. This is all designed to make the music recommendations in the iTunes MiniStore.

Apple has said that they don't store the information and no info is sent if the Apple MiniStore window is not open.

The issues is that privacy advocates had is that this was not revealed up front like other information such as the Gracenote Music Database that helps you name your CD collections automatically.
